In 1949, Bud Madden clerked a sale south of Ypsilanti for Earl Johnson. The auctioneer charged a nickel for selling the dog. Bud was upset, and told Jim about it. Jim tossed his hat in the air, and had it sold before it reached the ground. Bud suggested that Jim go to auctioneer school. He did that in 1949, and had his first sale in 1950.
Cliff Orr graduated from the Mason City Auction School in 1971. In 1974, he began offering complete auction services, with his wife clerking most of the sales, billing it as the More From Orr Auction Service.
Duane Domek attended auctioneer's school in Mason City in 1981.
