Gust Marks was born at Bemis, South Dakota, the son of Wilhem and Emilie Marks. Gust married Jennie Kleinheksel on December 31, 1921. They had one son, Roland Marks.
Gust and Jennie Marks moved to a farm near Ypsilanti, in Stutsman County, North Dakota, in 1928, where they farmed until 1947. At that time, their son, Roland, took over the farm, and they moved to Jamestown.
In Jamestown, Gust worked for the city for a few years, then retired. In his younger days, Gust's nickname was "Speedy". He was given that name due to the fast balls he could pitch, as he was a star pitcher for the Ypsilanti baseball team. Gust died in 1975.
Roland Marks married Mary Docktor in 1947, and they had two sons: Dale Marks and Gary Marks.
