James (Jim) Davis and Helen Mutchler were married in 1954. Prior to her marriage, Helen had been a long-time teacher in the Ypsilanti-Corwin community, retiring from teaching in 1960. Jim and Helen lived on the home farm, which was a quarter that his grandfather, Carl Daede, had gotten as a tree claim in 1885 by planting ten acres of trees on it. Jim bought it in 1943 for $3,200. Besides farming, "Colonel Jim" was known for miles around for his auctioneering service. At the time that the Ypsilanti Community Centennial Book was published in 1982, Jim was still farming and raising cattle on his farm.
