Merle Kipp was born in Iowa in 1909, and attended school in California, before coming with his parents and family to a farm east of Ypsilanti, in Stutsman County, North Dakota. He attended Ypsilanti School No. 2, otherwise known as the Madden School.
When he was a young man, he moved to California, serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Later, he was employed by a paper company in Los Angeles.
He and his wife, Mona, had one daughter, Susan. Merle passed away in 1975.
