Vernon (Bud) Whitney, the son of Ed and Edith Whitney, was born on January 22, 1918, in Winfield Township. He grew up and attended school in the Ypsilanti community of Stutsman County, North Dakota.
On September 20, 1940, Vernon married Marjorie Kramp, daughter of Pete and Nellie Kramp. Marjorie had grown up in the Eckelson area of North Dakota. Following their marriage, they Bud and Marjorie farmed in the Ypsilanti area until 1971, when they built a new home in Ypsilanti.
Bud was active as a leader in the 4-H for twenty-eight years. They had six children: Robert, Lyle, Linda, Marlene and Charlene, who were twins, and Dean.
