Fred Nelson lived for a number of years near Big Falls, Minnesota. He was a carpenter, and he also did a lot of logging in Minnesota.
After a few years, Fred and his family moved to a small farm about five and a half miles southeast of Ypsilanti, in Stutsman County, North Dakota. Among his closest neighbors in the Ypsilanti community were the families of Hans Mell, Peter Gomsrud, Ellef Mohn, John Halstad, Nels Lien, and Fred Nicholls.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nelson had six sons and two daughters: Walter, Carl, Ernest, Edward, Willie, Thorwald, Minnie, and another daughter.
Fred built the first Recreation Pool Hall in Ypsilanti in the early 1900s.
